Objectives of Texas Holdem
In Texas Holdem Poker, just like in other poker variants, each player competes for the pot (an amount of money contributed by all players at the table). Since the cards are dealt in the random order and players cannot control the deal, each individual attempts to influence on pot size based on the hand type he or she holds.
The game of Texas Holdem Poker is divided into a series of deals, or hands. In the end of each deal the pot is usually awarded to the player holding the strongest Texas Holdem Poker hand, unless there are two or more players holding equally strong hands in this case the pot is equally split among all winners. Typically the game ends with the showdown. In this case all players still staying in the pot (those who haven’t folded before the showdown) compare their hands and determine the winner. However, if all, but one player fold before the showdown, the remaining player takes the pot regardless of his holdings.
The major objective of Texas Holdem Poker is not just winning separate hands, but rather making correct mathematical and strategic decisions regarding how much and when to call, bet, raise or fold. This way winning Texas Holdem players maximize their winnings in the long run, therefore maximizing your expected utility on each betting round is better than just trying to win separate hands. Remember that successful Texas Holdem players play just about 25% of starting hands, but when they finally get the nuts they know how to squeeze each cent out of opponents’ pockets.
